Your Life Abroad

Traveling and Living Abroad for Families

In Uruguay healthcare is free. If you get sick, they'll (apparently without regard to your nationality) fix you up gratis. That having been said, most people who can afford private healthcare buy it.

Here buying insurance called becoming a 'socio' (member) of a hospital. Your costs will vary but we've found it's between 50 and 90 USD per person per month. Getting insurance can take a month or two - you take an initial exam then they call you back and let you know if you're eligible.

The most popular hospital in Montevideo for foreigners is Hospital Britanico, the British Hospital. The doctors are often educated in America or the UK and speak English. The hospital is large, clean and nice.

Medicina Personalizada is another good one. Slightly more expensive than Britanico.

The plans cover pretty much everything. Ambulance service, extended stays, pregnancy (from the beginning) and giving birth (after 10 months of membership). You can probably work with them to customize a plan to fit your needs as well.

Feel free, of course, to research others, but the two hospitals listed here are the one's we're familiar with and comfortable recommending. Others are the American Hospital, Summum and La Española.
